Seattle, WA – Hot on the heels of their third national championship 34 days previous, Mudville opened up the 2015 season with a Mini Fall Ball Season on a spectacular sunny Seattle September day, and an opening win, defeating the Seattle Dodgers, 7-5 at Magnusson Park, located at the site of the old Naval Air Field at Sand Point.
Paced by both their returning and newly added players, the go ahead runs of the clinching 3-run 7th inning was delivered by senior OF Brice Kozlosky (Bainbridge) after a lead-off walk drawn by newcomer LHP Hunter Trewin’s (Lake Washington) walk followed by C/OF Bryce Wilson’s (Ingraham) single. Kozlosky scored the third run of the inning by advancing on 3B Jacob Mortensen (AC Davis), single, RHP/1B Nathan Aebi’s (Sammamish) walk and a sacrifice fly by LHP/1B Nic Metcalf (Burlington-Edison).
Mudville scored their first three runs in the top of the 3rd inning. The rally started by sophomore SS/3B Jack Smith’s (Mercer Island) lead-off single, who shortly then stole 2B for his first career Mudville theft. Five base-on-balls and a wild pitch wrapped around two outs from the Seattle Dodgers staff yielded all three Pinnacle runs. The lone Mudville run in the 4th was produced a Mortensen walk, a stolen base and a RBI single by Metcalf.
Returning senior pitching; LHP Sam Lawrence of Skyline (2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, BB, 2 Ks), RHP Jordan Sagmoen of West Seattle, (1 IP, 0 ER, 3 Ks, BB, HBP) and RHP Doug Knight, now at Skagit Valley CC/Stanwood, (2 IP, 0 ER, 2B 5Ks) subdued the Dodger offense for the first 5 innings to secure a 4-1 lead. Sagmoen (1-0) received credit for the win. The Dodgers rallied late in the scheduled 9-inning game, falling short by two.
Mudville pitched 9 Pinnacle pitchers at a 25-pitch count or less. Pitching debuts included Metcalf (1 IP, 2ER, 3H, 2Ks, BB), junior LHP Gavin Baker of Bellevue HS (1 IP, 3 BF, K, DP), Skyline’s RHP Travis Thomas (0.2 IP, 1 ER, 3 BB, HBP), Aebi (0.1 IP, 1 BF), Trewin (0.1 IP, 1 ER, H, BB) and RHP/OF James Kim, (0.2 IP, SV, H, BB).
Mudville graduated 14 players last season then added 16 new players to their 2015 roster. The added players consist of a balanced group of four seniors, five juniors, six sophomores and a freshman. Mudville fortified their strongest asset from last season – their bull pen – and now has seven ‘pitchers-onlys’ on their staff, including multiple left-handers. The depth in the 2015 recruiting class will be extremely beneficial in the next three seasons with a young, talented middle infield and outfield. The corner positions are loaded with offense and strength up the middle continues behind the plate as the catching corps is deep and well balanced in class graduation.
Other new players on the 2015 roster include 2B/3B Brooks Wallace (Bainbridge), RHP Jack Alden (Garfield), OF/3B Ben Hinthorne (Lakeside), 2B/SS Cameron Mikami (O’Dea), C/RHP Mack Mahovlich (Issaquah), RHP/OF Peyton Wells (Eastside Catholic) and SS/2B Jacob Bailet (Seattle Prep). Other returning players include RHP/OF Ryan Gayte (Hazen), C Max Thomas (Bainbridge), RHP Riley Grauer (O’Dea), C/3B Ryan Shaw (Lakeside) and RHP/CF Colton Mahovlich (Eastside Catholic).
